Nick Savko & Sons, Inc. continues to enhance it construction reputation with the completion of over 500 roller compacted concrete (RCC) jobs, since first introducing RCC pavement in the central Ohio market in 2001. Roller compacted concrete pavement has many uses including the rebuilding of residential streets for municipalities, as well as commercial applications in paving parking areas, truck docks and structural sub flooring in warehouses and distribution centers, to name just a few.

Savko has the largest fleet of RCC mixing plants and paving equipment in the Midwest.  With this equipment and our skilled associates, we have successfully placed more cubic yards of RCC than any other operation in the Midwest.

Savko continues to find new applications for RCC, and use this technology along with its fleet of portable mixing plants to pave a 71-acre intermodal facility for Norfolk Southern Railroad at Rickenbacker, just south of Columbus, Ohio. The advantages of RCC are numerous.  In addition to the benefits of 2-hour vehicle, higher flexural and compressive strengths, and major cost savings on material and labor, RCC pavements eliminate common and costly problems long associated with asphalt pavements.

RCC Pavement Concrete Performance
FEATURES: BENEFITS:
Higher flexural strength (500 to 1,000 psi) (3.5 MPa to6.9 MPa) Supports repetitive heavy loads; concrete pavement can span localize soft sub-grade areas reduces maintenance
Higher compressive strengths (4,000 to 10,000 psi)(28 MPa to 69 MPa) Withstands high concentrated loads and impacts from heavy industrial, military, and mining applications
High shear strength Eliminates rutting and subsequent repairs
High density, and Low absorption Provides excellent durability, even under freeze-thaw conditions; eliminates seepage through pavement
Low water content, low water / cement ratio Increase strength. Reduces permeability, and enhances durability and resistance to chemical attack
Aggregate interlock Provides high shear resistance at joints and uncontrolled cracks to prevent vertical displacement or faulting
No steel reinforcing or dowels Speeds and simplifies construction and reduces cost
No forms or finishing Speeds construction, reduces costs and minimizes labor
No formed or sawed joints Speeds construction, reduces costs. To enhance appearance, joints can be sawn into RCC pavement
High durability light colored surface Resists abrasion, eliminates need for surface  course and reduces costs. The light color reduces lighting requirements for parking and storage areas
